My question involves vehicle registration or title in the state of: California
I rode with a friend to his job site, (60 miles), to help out. His worker drove out in his car a little later. I was asked to pick up lunch, because I needed to find a restroom, badly (no plumbing). The only vehicle available was the worker's car, and did not think to check the tags, because of the urgency and it was a two minute drive, literally. A cop pulled behind me at the light where I was making a left to pull into the parking lot. He lit me up when I turned in to park, right in the lot. I told him it was not my car, and I was working out there having no idea where the registration and insurance card was at. I did not find any documents, anywhere. he said he would not impound the vehicle, and would only, cite me for no/expired registration. He took my info, and ran the plates including the owner's info/, name and address.
The owner said he just needed the smog to pass, and the registration was paid. That does not make it legal, I know. I, also know it is my responsibility to ensure the vehicle is legal to drive, before driving any vehicle, mine or not.
My question is, if the owner has moved, and I do not know where to find him how does this affect me? All I know is the house he lived in w/girlfriend has sold, and heard she sold everything to move out of state. For all I know they sold the car along, with everything else. Does that make me liable for some outrageous fines, and/or does that mean I have to cover smog penalties, as well?
Thank you for any help you can provide!
