Liquor Laws: What to Expect After Being Charged With Selling Alcohol to a Minor

My question involves criminal law for the state of: Ohio

I worked at a retail store that had been involved in a police sting. I was a supervisor of the front end and felt bad for this guy and another woman who had been waiting in line to check out. As a supervisor I am not allowed to hop on a register so I pulled them over to our brand new self check outs. The guy needed an override code because he was purchasing beer and ironically we had just updated our system to all alcohol sales on the self check outs that very day.. it didn't ask me to scan his Id (not an excuse) but I deemed him with my judgement of age and did ask his date of birth. He said 10/04/1994 so I entered it, never seeing the liscenses. Not even a minute later the officer came back and gave me a citation for selling to a minor, which if he was I wouldn't have known because he told me otherwise... I showed up to court and wanted to plead guilty bc I just want to deal with this and have it behind me but the judge referred me to plead not guilty for my best interest so I did. Otherwise I would face 6 months in jail. I have to go back to see if I qualify for a public defender this week and I'm nervous what to expect. I have been to jail before for failure of paying a court fee/ community service in the past, I was irresponsible but since have taken pride in being honest and incredibly responsible. It's been about 8 years since. I already have been terminated from my job and have already lost so much I'm not sure I could handle facing jail time after everything I've already been through...

Any advice or info on what to expect I would appreciate.

Has anyone been through this before? What happened to you/ the case?
