My question involves a traffic ticket from the state of: Michigan
Hello,
I was recently cited for an illegal lane change. It was written on the ticket "illegal lane change crossed two solid white lines". The officer said he cut me a break by writing me a $145 parking ticket instead of for the illegal lane change. I was getting off of I-94 westbound onto Ecorse Rd. The lane terminates into a turn right only lane if you do not merge into one of the left two lanes. There is a traffic light about a block up from the off ramp with traffic stopped and waiting to turn right. I merged early when it was safe to avoid the stopped traffic and I crossed the channelizing line went through a small section of neutral area and crossed the other channelizing line. I used due care (blind spot and mirror check with no traffic coming) and used my signal to merge. I was unable to find a clear definition if what I did was illegal or not. The section of roadway I crossed is similar to figure B on page 360 at https://mdotcf.state.mi.us/public/ta...nteractive.pdf. It was not two parallel lines as shown on page 370. Was I in the wrong for what I did? I travel this section of road every day and this is the first time I have been pulled over for this. The officer normally sits there to catch people merging across 3 lanes to get to the left turn lane to Inkster rd. which is prohibited from the off ramp. Ironically, two semi's did the prohibited 3 lane change to get to the turn lane behind me cutting the officer off when he pulled out but he chose to pull me over instead. If I was in the wrong thats fine I'll pay the fine and move on. However, I have not found that what I did was illegal. Can you please help? Thank you.
P.S. The reason I merged early was due to the traffic light cycles and frequency of semi traffic on that roadway. If you wait for the stopped traffic in the right turn lane to go through the light, traffic from the light behind will catch up and you will be blocked and unable to merge out of that lane. I advised the officer of this and he said instead of merging across the channelizing lines to avoid the stopped traffic turning right I was to stop in the off ramp lane until traffic in the left lane was clear and then merge.
