My question involves labor and employment law for the state of: Maryland
My employer sent out an email stating that when we make mistakes we must pay her a fine in cash. I'm aware of the Maryland law that wage deductions are illegal without written consent, but it seems to me that this would be a loophole, since she isn't taking the money out of our paychecks, but making us pay it to her in cash - so would that technically not be a wage deduction? What is the legality of this? She's claiming the money is going to a beer fund, but paying the fines isn't optional - one of my coworkers dissented to having to give her money and she got angry and said he had to pay. He did it because he was afraid of being fired.
