I am a university student in Wisconsin and was caught smoking in a dormitory with my window open (I've been struggling with mental health issues and forgot about the rule about smoking inside university buildings). I was written up by my floor's resident advisor, but I apologized and was cooperative with them, and they told me that I would possibly have to meet with a university official, most likely get a warning and potentially a fine.
However, I am also under the age of 18. To the best of my knowledge, in my state the possession/consumption of tobacco by a minor is not technically illegal, but I could be incorrect. What I would like to know is will the university be legally required to notify my parents? Also, will the penalty be more severe due to my legal status as a minor? Thanks in advance.
