Medical Issues: FMLA Eligibility if You're on Sick Leave on the Anniversary of Your Start Date

My question involves labor and employment law for the state of: Florida

My wife recently gave birth on Saturday. Her hire date was DEC 2nd 2014. She has sick time to cover from today, until the 2nd. However her employer is saying she cannot use her sick time she would have to immediately go into a "medical leave" for a maximum of 30 days.

They then stated if she took the Medical Leave, it would change her start date and she wouldn't be eligible for FMLA until she gets back and works the missed time off, plus the 7 day difference. I was under the impression that once a year hits, she is able to take FMLA, even if they grant 1 week, or 1 month, or medical/personal leave. Who is correct? Is it really possible for your "start date" to change
