Non-Performance and Breach: Caontractor Abandoned Job and Left Trailer/Tools and Materials Bought for the Job at

My question involves a consumer law issue in the State of: Georgia

In July 2017, we hired a contractor to complete a master bath remodel after and leak that caused major damage and mold.
He worked on it a couple of months and then disappeared. He left his trailer, tools and all the materials he bought with the money we gave him. My husband and a friend have been worked on completing the remodel using the materials he left.

After 5 months, he has shown up to get his trailer. He asked about the materials and was told the materials were ours and we had used them to complete the job. He has filed a civil case against my husband for thief of his materials.

In Georgia, what is the law around the materials? If bought with our money and used to complete the job that he abandoned, does he have any claim to them?
