Okay, so I think I posted once before. Here's the long and short of it.
In 2010 my dad became completely disabled, but was denied. He didn't appeal then. In 2014, weeks before his sudden death--which we didn't see coming--he had hired an attorney and filed for disability again.
He is married to my mom, who I'm helping with all of this.
Last month Social Security paid out all the way back to 2010 for my youngest sibling who is still under 18, but only back a few months for my mom who turned 60 last year.
Shouldn't they pay my mom back to the onset date too? They established his disability date as 2010, when he first applied.
Seems to me like they should give that back pay to my mom. Is there a rule that my mom and I can't find to understand why they figured to pay my sister in full back to 2010 but my mom only back to when she turned 60 the April before my dad died?
Any help understanding this would be appreciated. We've called and met with SS in person and asked for a determination letter but she said it would arrive in the mail sooner or later and she didn't want to print it out. I think they made a mistake and she saw that because she got really quiet and read her computer monitor before saying that she wouldn't print it out for us. We were right in her office and she said they'd be mailing the letter sooner or later, maybe next week. Seemed fishy. They direct deposited the money on the first of this month and still no letter on how they figured it out. Just what she told us that they went back to 2010 for my sister but only to when my mom turned 60.
