My question involves malpractice in the state of: NY.
I moved to the US from Europe just 3 months ago and I don't understand how the insurance system works. I went to visit an OBS-GYN found on ZocDoc just for a prescription. Since It was the first time in that clinic they told me I could be offered several exams at no cost. I asked many times if they accept my insurance and if I would have to pay anything for all the exams, but they kept saying that this was at no cost. They told me that I will receive a bill in several weeks and just return that bill to them in person of via regular mail. That would be it. No costs for me.
A friend of mine was going to book at the same clinic but she checked in the insurance website and the doctor was not listed as in-network. I called the clinic and they wouldn't tell me if they were in network or not. Then I asked my insurance and they confirm that this doctor is out of network and my bill will be high for all the exams I did. The insurance also mentioned that if they told me I didn't have to pay probably I have to ask for a discount. What all that means? Why did they lie to me? I don't have enough money to pay if I get the bill. Is there something I can do about it? Thanks for the help, I'm so confused and frustrated.
