My question involves a child custody case from the State of: Kansas
Young, unmarried and mostly unemployed couple have a child while both living at home of father's parents, who support them. Relationship ends due to father's controlling behavior and emotional/verbal abuse. Mother leaves home of her child's paternal grandparents when child is 2 with an understanding that parents will joint parent yet wanting child to stay in familiar surroundings until she has her own place. (Mother lived in a motel while saving for apt). Once father of child realizes he cannot get the mother to continue the relationship, he begins threatening loss of contact with child, telling mother he will accuse her of sexual abuse, etc. Fast forward 2 years: mother has been working and has apartment while father continues to live with his parents and is unemployed. His parents have retained an attorney to establish paternity (Mother was legally married to another but separated at child's birth). Father used threats at that time to coerce mother into signing a very restrictive parenting schedule. Mother not able to afford an attorney to date and has been unable to get help through legal aid. Father's attorney filed for paternity mid-2016 and father is uncooperative regarding mediation. He allows the mother only 2 days a week by coercion, had enrolled the child into preschool and other activities without allowing the mother any input, encourages child to call his new girlfriend "mom", as well as other alienation tactics. (He didn't tell Mother about Pre-K graduation ceremony, wouldn't put mother on the list for pick up, and enrolled child with his last name though legally the child has mother's last name ) Mother has stated to court she is unhappy with arrangement but was ignored last court date. Upcoming "status" hearing in court only weeks away and father has filed for child support though he also doesn't support child. I know an attorney is needed badly but what should be done at the status hearing? Isn't father in contempt of joint parenting? Any competent help appreciated. Any referrals for attorneys specializing in parent alienation in IS very much needed. Google didn't help there.
