Probate Court Procedure: Who Supervises an Executor

My question involves estate proceedings in the state of: New York

If the executor of the estate is a family member, who makes sure the executor is distributing the estate? I know the court/judge has to approve the executor to handle the estate, but then what? Does the executor have to go before the judge to show the estate has been settled? Is there some time line for this to be done?

With my personal experience with this this and a few friends I have spoken with, it seems having a family member as an executor/executrix is not a very good decision. Someone who is not emotionally involved, a non family attorney would be a better choice and be able to keep things on track.
