My question involves defamation in the state of: I am a retired detective in good standing. I did a search warrant on a subject based on lawful probable cause and the execution of the search warrant was video documented. The presiding Deputy DA originally declined to prosecute because she was a neighbor of the defendant and said she thought he was a nice guy. The case was dismissed by this DDA and then the defendant filed a lawsuit against me, my department and the county. The lawsuit was dismissed in it's entirety. However a friend of the defendant has started an online newspaper and is running the story that I fabricated the search warrant, stole the defendant's property and then abruptly quit when a new sheriff was elected. All of these allegations have been proven false and yet the online story continues to grow legs. I have spoken to our county counsel about the issue, but they say to let it go since I haven't been financially hurt. Since I am now retired, and not because of this issue, how will I know if this online article is impacting any possible jobs I may be applying for? And what can I do about this?
