My question involves adoption law for the State of: Michigan
Okay, I'm a writer (nothing big, just stuff I've posted online, I'm willing to share links) and one of the stories I'm writing I've decided I wanted the main character is at the end of his wrestling career, makes/made a good living at it but his wife was recently shot to death in front of him. During the depression of losing his wife of 20+ years, he finds a homeless child and wants to take them in.
THING IS: I know just finding a child on the street and taking them in HAS to be illegal if you don't report them to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. What kind of legal troubles is my character looking at for not reporting a missing child? Legally, after the child was taken and has no living members of their family, can my character adopt them? What does my character have to do to gain legal custody of the child? Would my character's wife death and his biological children play a factor in adoption?
