My question involves vehicle registration or title in the state of: Kansas
I am looking for option on what I can do about a title I lost before I registered the vehicle.
I live in Kansas and bought a vehicle from Missouri for $1500.
The first thing I did was take the title to the KHP to get it inspected. No problem.
When I went to the DMV they tell me that since the title is in Husband and wifes name I need to have both their signatures. I only obtained the husbands but remember the man telling me his wife passed away about a year ago, which was the reason he was selling the van. So I told the DMV this and they said I would need a certificate of death from the husband. They also told me that there was a lien listed and I would need a lien release as well. I called the owner up and he promptly got what I needed the next day. Again I went to the DMV, this time they said that the price written on the title looked strange and they would not accept it without a written BOS from the original owner. Again I went back to the owner and he was more than happy to get me what I needed. By this time I had already taken a couple days off work and needed to wait until the next monday to go back to the DMV.
First thing that monday I went back up only to realize I had everything except for the title. I looked everywhere, in my car, my home, work. It was gone. So I did a little research online and it looked like the easiest option was to ask the original owner to apply for a lost title. I called him up and offered to pay him for his time if he could do that for me. He seemed a little apprehensive at first but agreed non the less. I think he thought I was trying to pull some type of scam. 6 weeks go by and I dont hear anything so I try calling him but no answer, 7 weeks I try calling and emailing him but again no answer. Then finally 8 weeks he sends me a text and says he has been very busy but has sent everything off and was waiting to hear from the DVM. So I wait another 2 weeks and again try calling but no answer.
The text message where he claimed to have filled the paperwork for a lost title is dated 9/15/2015. It is 2/3/2016 now and I have a van I have been paying for insurance on that has just been sitting in my driveway. I have tried calling, emailing, and texting but no response. Everything on the internet I find says that it shouldnt take more than 6 weeks to get a lost title back.
At this point I dont know what to do.
My question is: Do I have any other options?
