My question involves criminal law for the state of: Michigan...In 2007, my husband received a DUI in Ohio. We lived in Michigan so he had a Michigan driver's license. He served his time in jail, paid all the fines, had his license revoked, joined AA, just celebrated 10 years of sobriety. We just recently sold our Michigan house and moved to Ohio to be closer to family (we are both 73). Two weeks before we moved, he received a letter stating he owed $1,000 in 2017 and another $1,000 for the Michigan Driver Responsibility fee. He lost his driving privileges for 1 month and they restricted his driving privileges for 6 months. We don't have $1,000 so I called Lansing, MI and set up a payment plan. My husband hasn't had a violation of any kind in 10 years! We've lived in Ohio for 5 months now. Don't the points for a DUI fall off after 7 years? Isn't there some kind of statute of limitations? We talked to a Michigan attorney and an Ohio attorney...neither would offer to even check into it...they just said there was nothing they could do. This is so unfair! It's a financial burden and my having to drive everywhere for the past 6 months is very stressful. Do you think he could just get an Ohio license and just not drive in Michigan or will Michigan put out a warrant for his arrest? We really need some advice because it is affecting our physical health as well as our mental health. Thank you!
