Transferring Title: Truck I Bought Was Not in Sellers Name

My question involves vehicle registration or title in the state of Kentucky. My husband purchased a vehicle from a man who said the title was good and everything was notarized. Unfortunately this was not the case. The man's name was not on the title, nor was the previous owners. The truck still technically belongs to a company in another state who sold it through auction. However they refuse to transfer the title or have anything else to do with the truck. We talked to the sheriff and we aren't guilty of anything. Just lost on what to do. We're out almost 2000 and money is very tight for us right now.
