Termination: Property Buyer Surprised to Learn of an Easement Across the Property

My question involves real estate located in the State of: North Carolina

We purchased a home in rural NC July 2015. This week a realtor put up a sign to sell land beyond mine and I was told there is an easement. I spoke to my realtor and attorney involved in the closing on my home and ALL were unaware of easement. According to realtor representing the adjacent land owner, there was once an 8' gravel driveway passing through my property to gain access to property and cabin beyond mine. As far as he can tell, an easement was granted way back in 1937 and maybe before that. This is very troubling because an 8' drive would be right through where we plan on putting deck off the kitchen, right over several trees, and where we were building a goat barn. We did not have this information beforehand so I wonder what recourse we have how enforceable is an easement agreement which we were not party to. I'm told that if the land owner wants to they can have the gravel road put in again. And yes, their property is landlocked. This is so upsetting to us and my husband is ready to put our beautiful home and property up for sale if we cannot stop this.
