My question involves criminal law for the state of: utah
I was in the phone with something from the store and walked out while on the phone. I had previously made an exchange without a receipt and left my drivers license info. I realized when I was home that I had the item but got busy and never returned to return it. The police showed up at my house last night, read me my rights and asked me about it. I was nervous and scared and didn't initially fess up but eventually I told them what happened. I assume that was a bad to talk about it since it was probably taped on their cameras and I didn't have a lawyer. I have a clean record with no previous offenses. I didn't need the item and want this to go away and feel bad that I didn't take care of it before. I wanted to go to Kohls to talk to their manager and loss prevention security. I thought that if I made restitution I could ask them to have the prosecuter drop the case. Is that a good idea??? Please help. I've never been in a situation like this and I know that my absent mindedness probably won't gain much sympathy. Can the store decide to drop the charges if I apologize and pay for the item?
