Modification of Custody: Wanting Sole Custody

My question involves a child custody case from the State of: Iowa.

I have 3 children with my ex. He was abusive (physically and mentally) for the 5 years we were together. I offered to work visitations out between us two because I knew he couldn't afford paying child support. One day he was having his time with the children and it ended with him almost hitting me with a hammer. I tried to get a restraining order after he threatened me for not wanting to get back together. He purposely dodged the Sherrif so as not to get served to come to court and continued harassing me.

After realizing I was really done with him this time he decided to move away. He hadn't seen any of our children for over a year. I finally felt safe. I found out he was back in town when he showed up at our oldest child's school. He hadn't seen her or talked to her since then. & now I found out he's back in jail.

This is his 3rd domestic abuse charge. Plus other charges. Just wondering what my chances are to get sole custody of my children.
