Auto Insurance: Insurance Company Canceled an Auto Policy in Error, then Charged for Uncovered Months

My question involves an injury that occurred in the state of: My question involves an injury that occurred in the state of: Tennessee

So my husband and I have been with this insurance company for a little over a year and about a month ago we find out our policy was canceled. We talk to the office and it was determined that our insurance should not have been cancelled as we never withheld any information regarding our vehicles. Anyway, so they were like in order for your rates not to increase due to the lapse, we will have to backdate your coverage to make it appear that you had insurance (which is understandable as it was their mistake). However, under no circumstances were we informed we would be charged for backdating those months that we weren't actually covered for. From my understanding, with backdating comes prorated charges which means you are charged for the day the service or whatever was started but not for the days it was not in use. I really feel like we are being cheated as the cancellation was not our fault and had we been covered we would have paid at that time, but we were not and had we gotten pulled over during any one of those days we weren't covered no backdating would pay for our ticket. I really need to know if there is something that can be done about this.
