Traffic Lane Violations: Ticket for Driving Across a Divided Highway, VC 21651(B)

My question involves a traffic ticket from the state of: California

Hello,

I was driving in heavy traffic today and ended up receiving a 21651 (b) citation. What happened was I was driving on a 4 lane road with one middle lane that is for turning (Santa Monica Blvd in LA). I was behind a larger van, and not able to easily judge the amount of space in front of that vehicle. There are a lot of lights on this section of Santa Monica, and I came to a stop in the middle of an intersection behind the van. The light was about to change, and I was now blocking traffic. I could see drivers waiting to get around me in the cross street. I didn't see how I could get around the van except to turn into the center lane, so I pulled into that lane and forward to the light. I turned left at that light and was then pulled over by a police officer who witnessed this. The officer said I drove through a section that was marked for turns the other direction, and that I should have instead tried to pull to the other side of the road, which appeared blocked to me.

The ticket indicates this is a 21651 (b) violation, which appears to be 2 points! For some reason the ticket has "Infraction" circled on the ticket, but from what I can tell from research online, this is a misdemeanor.

Is there anything I can do here? Should I hire a traffic lawyer? Or just pay the fine and try for traffic school?

Thanks in advance!
