My son just turned 18, and we are helping him apply for SSI. He still lives in our home because he turned 18 a week ago. He wants to get out on his own, but he has severe Tourettes and cannot keep a job (or get hired easily) as a result. We are willing to continue supporting him, but he is an adult now and wants to be independent.
When can charge him rent to live in our home (but we rent, so I'm not sure that's allowed), or we can have him do the in-kind support. I'm not sure how to fill this out. There are only 3 of us in our household. Our rent is 1400/mo.
What we would like to do is have him "rent a room" from us at a percentage of his income to make it fair and teach him about finances. So, if he gets $600 from SSI, we would charge him 25% of that for room and board (because we spend about 25% of our income on room and board, and that number seems reasonable to me--but maybe it isn't?). So, he would pay us $150/mo for room and board to stay in our house and share food. Does that make sense?
Does anyone have guidance on this. Our son did not qualify for SSI before he turned 18 because my husband and I make too much money and we were included in his income. Now that he's 18, he wants to be independent, which I totally get. He's hoping to get SSI and pick up odd jobs or maybe be able to work a few hours a day somewhere in order to actually get out on his own eventually--maybe share an apartment with a friend or something--but he needs to learn how to do that first.
Any help is really appreciated!!
