Survivors Benefits: Notice of Overpayment

Just got 3 letters from SSA stating that there was an error in payment as of April 2015 until June of 2016. 2 letter were in reference to my minor children which basically said you've been getting too much for the last year and you owe us $14,000. The other letter said I wasn't paid enough and it listed my new widow benefit increase. How could a overpayment occur? My oldest child is over 18 and graduated from high school this year and my youngest turned 17 a few months ago. The survivors benefit I received stop when he turned 16. That's when I visited the ssa office and spoke to someone. They informed me I was going to be getting the widows benefit and my children would get their benefit until they graduated high school. How was I supposed to know they were paying them to much? Hopefully this is a mistake. I'm going to the ssa office asap. Any advise?
