Collection Lawsuits: A Levy on a Closed Account

My question involves collection proceedings in the State of: CA

A few weeks ago I got a notice of a levy. The documents did not say what bank account. I called the sheriff department to find out. I was told the name of the bank. It's a bank where I closed all of my accounts a few years ago. I called the bank and asked them about any levy on my account. I gave them my bank information, they said there was an attempt to put a levy on my account, but it was sent back because the account was closed.

According to the paperwork I got from the creditor, the account was levied and the sheriff was holding the funds. They are asking the court to allow the sheriff to release the funds to them. I sent in a claim of exemption before I knew which bank they levied. I now have to go to court next month. I'm going to court to answer for an opposition of exemption.

How do I handle this? I'm thinking of just calling the lawyer to find out about any levy. I'm living on Social Security and mystery shopping. My social security is exempt, it's direct deposit and not mixed with any other funds.

I guess my question is, how to handle the issue of a levy on an account I closed years ago. The bank returned the levy. But the lawyer is claiming the sheriff is holding the levied funds. There were no funds to levy.
