My question involves adoption law for the State of: Florida
I grew up in a household with my mother, my baby sister, my grandparents, and my aunt. It consisted of constantly moving in and out of my grandparents home when my mother would date a new guy and they would get a new place to live. My issues with my mother really started to take place when I was shipped off to take care of my Great Grandfather while he was dying in hospice. I was in a deep depression for a really long time, formed major depression disorder and a mild case of PTSD. My mother specifically says that I never asked to go home even though I begged her every week to let me come home with her when she visited.
Since then, I have moved in and out of my mother's home into my grandparents home for about five years now. When I was almost 19, I officially packed my things and moved out when my moms most current boyfriend called me a filthy whore and a waste of flesh and oxygen and threatened to kill me. She told me if I didn't like her boyfriend that I can leave when I please.
My baby sister, who turned 15 back in January, just moved in with me and my grandparents after my mother was sent to the mental hospital for a huge attack. She stayed with us a lot before then ever since July of '15 when the police arrested my mother's boyfriend for beating my mom and almost killing my sister.
My biggest concern is that my mother thinks she is parent of the year and does nothing to help us out when it comes to my sister's needs. My sister was diagnosed with Asperger's back in Fall '14 and requires a lot of extra care and patience that I have definitely learned over the years. We have had issues with my mother not handing over insurance information and not letting my sister's school and therapy speak to us about her home life because she is scared the government will take Sarah away. My mother also is collecting disability right now for clinical depression and drinks all her money away while she trashes my grandparents' old house that is currently in the process of being foreclosed on.
My question is that my grandmother wants to file for custody of my sister. We are scared our birth father will try to come for my sister, who is not on either of out birth certificates but we have paternity tests to prove we are his and he is supposed to be paying child support to my mother. Also, my mother might fight back. We are concerned with my sister's health and wellbeing. She hasn't seen a doctor in months or a dentist, my mother has not given us any information on back to school issues and whatnot, and I am just now given a release to speak to her therapist, but I am called right directly after interrogated about what I spoke to the therapist about.
My mother is very paranoid, she relies on checks from my Great Grandmother which pays for my mother's addiction to alcohol and whatever pills she takes for the fun of it. Most of my family has disowned her because her boyfriend is still abusing her and she refuses to leave him. And all we want is a stable home for my sister that has repeatedly shows signs of self-harm and thoughts of suicide. She has gotten better since living with me, but she feels pressured by my mom to move back home which puts her in a much deeper hole full of depression and literal self-hatred.
I am just not sure how to go about finding a decent lawyer that does not cost a small lottery winnings and will get my sistet into a stable home with the family she wants to live with.
