My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: South Carolina
I'm inquiring because I'm not sure if my husband and I have a small claims case against our landlord. We had a security deposit of $600. They inspected our unit (March 3rd) and sent us a final itemized statement saying we would be refunded $337, $150 of which is for patching the carpet from our dog. However, on March 22nd, they sent us an email saying we owed $76, which prompted us to call them. They stated that they sent us another statement, which they did not until after that phone call, that the carpet could not be patched and they had to replace it. Our move out date was March 1st. Is this something that they can do? We tried to take care of this matter before we moved out of state (we offered to use their contractors, purchase the carpet they use, etc) but they just kept telling us they would take care of it after we moved out.
