My question involves a marriage in the state of: Ohio
Hi,
I'm a single guy and I have never been married and am not sure if I ever will. I suppose part of what keeps me from wanting to get married is stories I hear from guys who have been ruined by divorce.
I wonder about what the point of getting married is, if so many marriages result in divorce. If my income is greater than my spouse, I will need to pay alimony and give up part of my assets if I have a divorce. So, it seems like marriage is a rigged game, unless you're 100% sure you will never get a divorce. But, isn't that what everyone thinks, when they tie the knot?
So, I want to know everything I can do to protect my assets and my future earnings if I ever do get married. I think knowing how to protect myself will give me confidence to go into serious relationships, without worrying about what a girl I meet could potentially do to ruin me, financially.
Where do I start?
I know pretty much anything can be specified in a prenuptial agreement but most people don't want to bring up the topic with their partner because the assumption is that there never will be a divorce and therefore the prenuptial agreement is unromantic....
Are there ways to protect one's assets without a prenuptial agreement, then? Can I put all of my money into an S-corporation or a partnership or something? Swiss banks?
What about money I will inherit from my parents? Is there a way their trust can be set up that will be favorable to me in case I ever have to go through a divorce?
Thanks.
