Following Too Closely: Ticket and a Court Date After a Rear-End Accident - What Should I Expect at the Court

My question involves a traffic accident in the State of: New York (NY)

Hi all,

so as the title says, I rear-ended a car last week and was issued a following to closely ticket by the officer who later arrived at the scene.

The accident was my fault. I had turned on the windshield wipers without realizing that the washer fluid had frozen and the rubber parts of the wipers had come off from snows and freezing weather (first time spending winter in snowy state). So instead of cleaning the windshield, wipers blocked my view and made an awful streaking noise that distracted me. By the time I got my attention back to the road, it was too late to fully stop my car so I ended up rear-ending the car in front of me. Thankfully there were no injuries (at least at the time, although the driver in the other car complained about neck pain) and the resulting damages were a scratch on the bumper for the car I rear-ended and a busted headlight and dented hood for my car. The driver of the other car spotted a police officer at near by gas station and brought him over, and the accident report was filed and I was given a ticket.

Now, this is the first time I've ever gotten into a car accident, let alone being issued a ticket other than for parking in the wrong zone. The officer told me I will have to appear in the court on 8th and also said other things but I was so dazed with shock that I don't really remember anything else. I have been worried sick and losing sleep over this court date since the accident. I searched online to get an idea of what's going to happen that day but instead got more confused and scared with conflicting stories and different state laws. Can any of you tell me what I should expect to happen at the court next Tuesday? And if you guys have any guidance or suggestion on how I can prepare for the day, I would really really appreciate it.
