My question involves labor and employment law for the state of: Virginia
In September my check was garnished for about $144 to pay my delinquent property tax. I received another letter in November stating that I now owed $200 for my delinquent property tax.
I called the city and inquired about it. They told me that they sent a letter out to my job earlier in the year but they never received payment. I assured her that it was deducted out of my pay but I would go back and double check.
I immediately double checked my pay stubs and confirmed that I was garnished for $144. I called my job to confirm that the garnishment was for the same issue. My job told me that the garnishment for personal property tax and gave me the exact same account number. I told the job my issue and to see if they can track down what happened to the payment.
My question is, "Am I responsible for the new charges or the job?" I don't think I should be liable for the extra $60 of interest/ late fees. What should I do?
Thanks,
TheRox
