Establishing an Order: Father of 14 Year Old Girls Wants Joint Custody

My question involves a child custody case from the State of: Missouri
I have twin girls that are 14, turning 15 in October. We live in the state of Missouri and their father lives in Michigan. He was incarcerated most of their lives and was released in December 2012. While he was in prison he would send the girls cards sometimes on their birthday, Christmas and some other holidays. After he was released there was nothing from him. This went on until 2015 when I made contact with him, the girls were old enough to start asking questions. The following summer of 2016 is when I made the trip to Michigan to let them meet him, we were in the state of Michigan for a week, while they did not stay with him they did see him off and on during that time, one of the girls wanted to stay a little longer but she was only there a couple days and I had to turn around and go get her, as she was very uncomfortable there and crying for me to pick her up. Since then I have made the trip up there once more, and although they did not stay overnight with him and his girlfriend, they did visit. I feel that I have done my part and then some, but where is his effort? This is a 600 mile trip for me, one that he has not made once. And now recently the Michigan court has been reviewed and the courts recommended raising his child support. The child support case was started in Michigan years ago when me and the children lived there, we have lived out of state for nearly 6 years now though. During all this time he has not mentioned custody or anything, but after the courts recommendation of support he is now telling me he wants joint custody, he wants them for the summers and spring breaks also, and is saying that he has 17 family members that has written letters on his behalf for the courts. This all came after the support recommendation, which he objected to, and Im fine with that, what I'm not fine with is him lying in his objection that he pays the girls cell phone bill, which he doesn't, I do, that he pays for all major out of pocket expenses, which he does nothing of the kind, that he pays all travel expenses, which he helped with one time and only one way, that he buys all their school clothes, which he bought a few one time, that he carries health insurance on them, which he has not all this time, if he has it on them now then he did so within the last few weeks. My question and concerns are doesn't he have to file with the courts here in Missouri where the girls live, when it comes to visitation? Can the courts make my children go with him? Is it not his responsibility to get to know them better and put forth that effort, instead of trying to get the courts to force them? Especially since they don't know him all that well and are not comfortable with staying and do not want to go with him for long periods? Do I have anything to worry about here? I cannot afford to run out and get an attorney. I have a home to run and 3 teenage children at home, I have full time bills and don't share all that with family as he does. Is 17 letters from family really going to help him? And are my girls not old enough to have some decisions in this? As I said, all this threatening with court and everything only started after his child support was to be raised, which he has only been paying the bare minimum, if that, I'm sorry but $8-$14 a week is not anywhere near sufficient for one child, let alone two. But even then I did not ask the court to raise it. I'm just tired and stressed from all this with him. He messages me and I replied that I'm not discussing these matters through text with him, it's to the point I'd rather not speak with him at all.

I've made the trip twice since the first time, I'm sorry I did not realize that I said I only did once.
