My question involves business law in the state of: NYC
I was working as a publisher with an AdNetwork that was advertising (they work with multiple advertisers) on my site.
Last September my dashboard stopped showing any profits, first network assured me that this is some technical issues, so I didn't stop their advertising but in the end of the month they said they want to stop working with me. I was upset as I have advertised them for free, but being a small guy I decided not to do anything about it and just move on.
January this year I have received payment from them a little more than $7,000 which a little less then their usual payment. The payment details has stated that is made for my site (URL & details were correct) so I thought they actually decided to pay for that month as they got paid from advertisers. Since I have relocated I have closed bank account after few month and I have filed for the corporation to be closed (it is not closed yet as my accountant suggested we have to file our last taxes/papers, so it will be fully closed January 2018).
11 month later (This November, today actually) I have received request from them (into my spam box) that they made a payment by mistake and want it back, they asked to answer within 10 days or legal team will get in touch.
I do not want to make a payment back as I truly believe I was paid for the advertising space provided and network just fooled me - but can they actually make me pay? What is the worst/best case scenario? Should I be afraid of the legal team? Can they take money from my other accounts? (considering the one they made payment to was closed long time ago).
