Arrest Warrants: What Will Happen if You're Wanted on a Warrant for Theft

My question involves criminal law for the state of: Texas

My boyfriend has a warrant out for him in Texas, originally for theft in the amount of less than $100. The warrant is from 2015 and is a class B misdemeanor. He left Texas and is still out of state. I do not know if the warrant is nationwide, but it may be because he was not able to get a driver's license in the state we are in now. We have spoken to a lawyer and the lawyer says he must return to Texas to fight this case, but he thinks he'll be arrested immediately if he goes back to Texas. My question is

1) Is it risky for him to go back to Texas to try to fight this case?

2) Is there a way to avoid jail time in a case like this?
