Security Deposits: How Do I Get My Security Deposit Back

My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: CA

Hi. I have a following situation with my previous landlord. I’ve read up on some tenant rights and still need some guidance on how to proceed in my situation.
My child and I lived in this one bedroom apartment for three years. The apartment complex was bought by the landlord a year ago and no official move in walkthough has ever been done between him and I. The landlord has no idea about the condition of the apartment when I first rented it. To my knowledge, the appliances and carpet have not been changed in the apartment for at least seven years.

When I gave him my 30 days notice I asked for a move out inspection, which was ignored. I wrote him and asked him in person for the inspection on several occasions and was ignored. He was not answering his emails until two days later after I left the apartment , when he e-mailed me and asked for the keys. I did keep the keys with me, since I was under impression that I should keep them until I get the move out walkthough . When he emailed me I left work immediately to bring the keys to him. When I got there 20 minutes later he was already gone. So, the keys were returned to his workers. And I got no walkthrough.

I am guilty sending him an angry e-mail , where I said angry things. He responded in even angrier manner, saying that he will charge me for extra two days of rent ( while keys were in my possession) and repair of the carpet. Yesterday I got a reconciliation letter from him, where he withheld $375 from my deposit. $90 for two days while keys were with me and the rest is “ cleaning fees” for such things as cleaning stove, refrigerator, broken window, bathtub , cleaning outside of windows ( I lived on the second floor) and so on. His cleaning fees are itemized, they are over $126, but not substantiated by any receipts. His check and reconciliation letter were sent 14 days from the day I returned the keys.

I need the money and I am pretty sure that the apartment was clean since I spent two days deep cleaning it. I have pictures but they show overall cleanliness of the apartment. I didn’t take pictures of the stove or refrigerator, or the bath itself, since I didn’t think it would get to this point.

How do I proceed in this situation? What are my main arguments in court?

Thank you
