Traffic Lane Violations: Advice on Fighting a Carpool Lane Ticket

My question involves a traffic ticket from the state of: California

I was pulled over a week ago for being in a carpool lane with no passengers. The officer had pulled ahead of me about 30 feet away at the point where i was about to exit (right before this the vehicle in front of me quickly exited first).
In my defense I was unable to distinguish if I was in the HOV lane or not due to the fact that there was heavy traffic and the road was in an upward slope. I was in the lane for roughly 20 seconds at a very slow speed at which point I noticed the marker on the road and I began my exit.
I'm seeking advice on how to proceed with the case. I would like to fight the ticket in hopes of cancelling it or a reduced fine however I do not know the likelihood of winning the case. This is the first ticket I've gotten since I began driving 5 months ago.
