Estate Assets and Debts: Backdating a Title Transfer to Before the Owner's Death

My question involves estate proceedings in the state of: California

I was DPOA for a friend who died over the weekend. His truck ended up in my driveway and I never succeeded in getting it sold. It's only worth about $4,000. We talked about this very possibility months ago, and he said if that happened just "gift it to yourself" and deal with it that way. For this reason, he signed the pink slip on every seller line but purposely didn't date his signatures, saying to fill that in as necessary.

He died intestate and there won't be any probate opened up. His only two heirs are his sisters and they live 1500 miles away. We've talked it over and they do NOT want the vehicle, or the hassle that comes with it. They are fine with me doing this.

Does anyone see a problem here if I date the transfer the day of his death?
