My question involves a child custody case from the State of: Connecticut
Hey guys,
I just need advice on exactly when in the custody process to get a lawyer. My ex and I are scheduled to meet with the family relations counselor at the end of April, but it is not at all clear that we'll be able to come to an agreement on a custody arrangement that works for our son. My ex is (putting it mildly) a combative type who will probably try her hardest to prevent me from getting the arrangement I want--joint custody.
I've heard from multiple informed sources that if my ex and I aren't able to come to an agreement, I would be able to delay the actual court hearing in front of a judge in order to get a lawyer. But I don't know how long the hearing would be delayed. Two weeks? A month? And so my question is this: Should I get a lawyer lined up now (I've already talked to three lawyers and have a good idea of whom I would choose)? Or should I wait to see what the family relations counselor says before I pay a lawyer a large retainer fee? In general, I'm just asking how this process of getting a lawyer while awaiting custody hearings works. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
