My question involves criminal law for the state of: CALIFORNIA
A friend was arrested for misdemeanor charge of petty theft. He contacted a criminal defense lawyer referred by a family friend. The lawyer wanted a $7500 retainer upfront, plus $1000 a day if it goes to trial.
Now I checked this attorney's court records and appearances on file, and he is representing defendants that obviously cannot pay the retainer or fees for a trial, which this attorney is doing for these apparent "low income" clients.. My question is there some program where a private (no public defender) criminal attorney gets paid for fees clients due to low income by the state, or some qualification??? (in calif)?
