My question involves criminal law for the state of: Oregon
This is perhaps a bit complicated but that I want to first be clear that I am looking for advice for us (parents) of an adult child who has an outstanding arrest warrant. This advice would pertain to what we should/shouldn't do both personally and how we should/shouldn't help our child.
Specifics: Deputies showed up at our house with an arrest warrant for our child who is out of the country. Sealed felony indictment. That is basically ALL we know. We have had extremely limited conversation with our son; due both to the remoteness of where he is and also not wanting to have our child share any information that may damage their defense. All we have done is make our child aware of what we know about the indictment. We really have no idea of what they may be accused of. My wife called the sheriff's office but they, of course, would not share any details. So, here are my specific questions but, if you have other pertinent advice (for us or that we should pass on to our child), please feel free to add.
1. Would there be any point in hiring an attorney to try to find out any more specifics on the charges? Is there any chance they could even find out anything?
2. Assuming the attorney could find something out, could they share anything with us before our child is formally charged? This is main an emotional issue, this whole things is extremely difficult and not knowing what the charges are is making it even more so.
3. Would our child benefit from having an attorney represent him before he returns to the US (which he plan to do once his obligation is complete)?
Thanks for any advice you can give us in regards to these questions or anything related.
