My question involves bankruptcy in the state of: MA
At the point at which I filed my Chapter 7 BK, in 2014, (from years ago when I was married), we owed some back taxes, appx 8,000. I had made payments on them, but not paid them off. The back taxes were from 2006 and 2007. They were included in the 2014 bankruptcy, and were discharged. I also had a tax return coming from 2012 (filed late in 2014). I put the tax return down in my wildcard exemptions, which I had plenty of room to do. All requested exemptions were granted.
The state gave me my 2012 tax return, but The IRS kept my 2012 tax return and applied it to 2006, despite the automatic stay in place. The bankruptcy discharged in Feb 2015. The IRS also kept my 2014 tax return to apply to the old taxes, though the 2014 tax return was filed 6 weeks after the discharge.
I still get threatening letters from the IRS about the old taxes.
What are my rights as far as tax returns go? Will the IRS ever stop harassing me?
