My question involves criminal law for the state of: California
Hello,
For the sake of anonymity I will Use guy, Girl, and Father.
Guy meets girl on Plenty of Fish (a dating website) A. Guy is under the assumption that you have to be 18+ to use the website. B. Girls profile says 22.
Guy and Girl start talking on the website and decide to exchange phone numbers. The start sexting (both ways). Only after the exchange Girl tells Guy she's 17 turning 18 this month. Guy ceases conversation and tells girl they can talk again when she's 18. Girl then messages guy 2 more times and receives no response. Guy has deleted the pictures because he felt grossed out.
24 hours later. Guy receives call from Father telling Guy how she was 15 and how he is with a detective and about to press charges but he wants to know Guys side of the story. Guy explains he really thought she was 22, Father then tells guy that girl had a seizure because of this and they now need to turn the phone off. Obviously hinting money can fix this. Guy explains how he's at work and needs to return. Father tells guy he won't press charges that moment under the decision they will speak later.
1 hour later. Guy calls father. father says that he wont press charges if Guy is willing to "help" with the hospital bill and turning the phone off. After telling him that Guy has no money, father starts to get aggressive about how he was going to give the phone to the detective if Guy couldn't "help" with the bills, then tells him it was $707 for the seizure hospital bill and $800 to turn the phone off, father then gives guy the number of $1500. Guy says he doesn't have that money, Father again gets aggressive about how he wasn't going todo this back and forth thing. Either get the money or the detective gets the phone. Guy then tells Father even if he can get his hands of that kind of money it won't be tonight. Buys himself 1 day to call back (tomorrow 5/6)
Guy is about 85% certain he is being extorted. Is there a real case? Should Guy give the money and pray? Guy is honestly a hard working person and a decent human being and he would never knowingly do this. Should he worry?
