Help

My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: north Carolina Our furnace is broken we asked landlord to fix it he said like hell he's going to get it fixed so we paid for itHe even told a employee of the heating company he was not going to pay for it to get fixed we took it out of the rent now he is trying to get us to pay him our 900 dollar rent plus the 500 we had to pay for the furnace so by the 15th he wants 1400 monthly from now on. everyone is disabled in the household except for one child . Any time we asked him for repairs for example the roof leaking he kept saying that was our problem to fix we had to beg and plead with him. Due to a not functional furnace our pipes froze and busted in multiple areas. We have informed him for 8 months the furnace, some pipes, the insulation under the house has fallen, and the floors are warped they feel like your going to step through them in places, they needed to be fixed vocal and written (notification to him) he said he would return with a copy of written notification but he keeps acting like he has forgotten and we kept paying him 900 on time every month now he wants jack it up before rent day because we took care of the furnace. We cant afford this new rent threat plus get stuff he wants to neglect getting repaired fixed ourselves. He even threatened to make our rent 4500 if we installed our own smoke detectors. What can we do
