My question involves criminal law for the state of: new york
So I made a harassment report (domestic violence I guess) on someone I know who would not leave me alone. They would not stop calling or texting me when Ive told them multiple times to stop. They would always make new numbers to contact me. I warned them before i was going to make the report. However, since usually this person does text me I assumed this new number texting me was them. Even though they denied it was them, I assumed it was because the person always does this behavior.
I made 2 harassment reports on this person, but it turned out this new number wasnt them. it was someone else. I didnt lie on my statements but it just turned out that the person wasnt them.
Can i get in trouble for this?? I did not intentionally lie, i honestly thought it was my regular harasser but ironically when i decide to take action this new number wasnt them this time.
one of the cops told me that since he didnt threaten me and the harassment report says there was no threat and just harassment, that the report is closed and shouldnt be no longer investigated. I informed them that i just wanted to make sure they dont get in trouble too, but he said that they wont since its just a report and its closed.
but now im worried about me. can i get in trouble for this? I just didnt find out it was a different person harassing me until after i already had made the report and i dont know if it would matter or not since its apparently closed and just a report. i dont know if i should update them on this info because i dont know if it would even matter. i know that they cant delete reports.
So my problem is that I made a harassment report on someone when it turned out to be somebody else.
