Adoption of Children: Sued to Terminate My Rights, Enable Stepdad to Adopt My Son and Asked to Pay for It

My question involves adoption law for the State of: Texas

I have a son (10 yrs old) who I have never had contact with, but have paid both child and medical support for since I was filed on a year after he was born. While not always on time, I have made sure to catch up every instance possible. My son's mother has been married for several years and I have never made an attempt to contact them, nor has she to contact me. I am now married and have another child. I have been trying to file for a modification on my support order for the past 2 years. I have several issues from being in the army and am no longer able to work. The mother has continuously avoided having a mediation for modification. Finally, the AG said they would subpoena her for a court hearing that would lower my support based on my inability to work. Suddenly, she had attorney representation and that delayed the hearing even further.

I received papers today saying I'm being sued for termination of rights based on the fact that I have never had visitation or provided financial/medical support to enable the stepdad to adopt my son. The papers also ask the court for me to pay for the process. I'm by no means an unfair man and will allow the stepdad to adopt my son because I know he has been a constant in his life. However, I have paid the financial and medical support and I do not understand why I should pay for the process. I do not have the means to get an attorney, so I need to know how I respond to this suit to avoid getting completely run over.
