Survivors Benefits: Child Survivor Benefits After Remarriage - New Step Parent Adopts Kids or Not

So, 7 years ago my first wife died suddenly. I was 54 and we had 9 children - 2 biological, 7 adopted. The children started collecting child survivor benefits (fairly low amount since she was primarily a stay at home mom). I am a professional so my earnings record is much higher (I am close to the medicare earnings maximum..some years higher, some lower).
Two years later I remarry to someone who is 5 years younger with a modest earning record (but higher than my first wife). Child survivor benefits continue at the same amount.
A year later my then-18 year old son becomes disabled and starts collecting SSI (not sure this matters but letting people know).
As of today, I am 61 and she is 56. While I am in fair health if I died tomorrow it wouldn't surprise me. My wife is in very good health. I currently have a 15, 13, and 12 year old at home.
My primary question is whether my current wife should legally adopt the children for social security purposes, or if it doesn't really matter. And I am always happy to have any other advice relative to social security since my situation is a bit more complicated than the average one (perhaps). Thanks!
