My question involves a child custody case from the State of: South Carolina
What can grandparents of the deceased father do to get custody of their grandchild? SC does have grandparents rights and they have gone through the courts and have been awarded visitation and rights that allow them to take her to the doctor and see school records, etc. But it has come to light that the mother no longer lives in the same house hold as the child. She is a known drug abuser. She left her with her parents and even wrote a letter stating they could "have" the child. Supposedly the mother is giving the other grandparents the funds she receives from SS to take care of the child. The other grandparents have verbally said they don't want the child, but will not say that their daughter is an unfit parent. There are so many problems at the home the child is staying in. I personally feel the child is being neglected. DSS has been called and they say all is fine. Since the grandparents rights have been awarded, the child has been taken to the doctor on many occasions, for things noticed as visitations were awarded. The child has even had to have a surgery to maintain her health, because she was not taken proper care of. Please help. Where do we need to go and how can we stop this neglect, borderline abuse of a 5 year old child.
