Retail Fraud / Shoplifting: Can I be charged with shoplifting if I paid for the item before leaving with it?

My question involves criminal law for the state of: Maryland

I attempted to exchange a toy and obviously during the holiday season it's busy, workers are stressed, and it's almost impossible to reach corporate by phone. I had just received the item ordered online the day before and I had the receipt.

The store's return policy stated that all I needed was the item (which was in new condition), packaging, and receipt but when I tried to make the exchange was told I needed my ID which I could not find while at the desk. I showed them the policy both (a) online since it was more detailed and explicitly stated that an ID was only needed if a customer did not have a receipt and (b) also the one printed in the store which said nothing about an ID being necessary, but was ignored.

I asked to speak with the manager who walked over said he couldn't do anything without an ID and walked away. After waiting over an hour I followed him and told him the policy and asked why I couldn't exchange the item. He told the customer service rep to call corporate for confirmation but she just kept helping other customers in line and made no effort to get ahold of them.

I called corporate from my cell and the wait time was approximately 30 minutes so at this point being extremely frustrated, waiting in the store for over an hour and have no one even care to try to help, and still having a ton of errands to complete, I grabbed the item I wanted to exchange went back to the customer service desk and said this item costs 'x' this one 'y' here is 'z' in cash (which was more than the difference) and left. Can I be charged with shoplifting even though I overpaid for the item (partially in cash and partially with the item I was attempting to exchange) since the exchange wasn't authorized?
