Construction Contracts: Contractor Not Paid

My question involves a consumer law issue in the State of: California

Hello Everyone! I'm new to the forum to ask about a unique scenario I'm in. I've looked around the web, but couldn't find anything that relates...

Backstory:

I'm a Realtor and met a client early last year who wanted to buy a property to fix up and resell. I found a property and he purchased it in December 2013. Once purchased, he wanted me to recommend a few different contractors who he could use. He settled on one, and I pretty much played middle man throughout the entire process since he didn't know anything about what type of design, finishes, etc will help it sell for the most. We decided on a contractor after both meeting him at the property and everything was done satisfactorily. The bill was roughly $40,000. My client paid half up front, then the remainder once everything was complete. In March 2014, we put the house up for sale and went into contract with a buyer. During inspections, the buyer wanted my client to add/repair a few items. Sent the contractor back out, and the total was $1,540. House sold, everything was good.

Now:

Today, 18 months later, I received an e-mail from the contractor stating that he never received payment for the $1,540 and will send me to collections unless I have e-mails from my client to forward over. He is attaching me to the collections since I was pretty much the one who played middle man. Unfortunately, I changed my e-mail address and do not have any of those previous e-mails. Also, I am no longer in contact with that client, and the contractor said he tried to collect payment from him, with no luck...

I'm wondering if I am liable for this debt... 1) I was never on title for the property. 2) My client made the previous two payments, isn't this to show that he was the one getting billed? 3) What are my options?

I know the amount isn't extraordinary, but it's still an amount I'd rather not pay.

I appreciate any help I can get. If anyone has any additional questions, please ask.

Thank you!
