My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: North Carolina
I live in an apartment in NC and I am currently leasing month to month, but I am actively looking for work elsewhere. As soon as I find a job, I will move out of my apartment. The property manager informed me that my rate for month to month will be skyrocketing soon, and I will not be able to afford it. However, if I sign an 11-month lease, it will be affordable. But the problem is, I might leave anytime. What if, hypothetically, I sign the 11 month lease, and in 6 weeks I find a job, I just ghost them. Just move out and drop a key and letter stating I am vacating immediately, and not tell them where I am going and never contact them again. What kind of legal action could they take if I were to do that? Could I get away with it? This is hypothetical of course. I'm just curious.
